WORKSHOPS

Knitting Energized Knit Surface with Commercial Yarns
$60
10am –1pm
Don’t spin, but want to be able to get these great knit surfaces? I will provide the yarns, you do not even need any new skills, just be willing to think about how you work in new ways. These energized S and Z yarns are designed by me and spun by Green Mountain Spinnery for me. Knitters will learn how to handle these yarns, I will talk about how to dye them if they want color. The energy in these yarns is not visible, but it is definitely present, just in an “at-rest” state. When these yarns are knit up and the sample washed!! The work will migrate, moving left to right, twisting, tilting all sorts of wonderful things will happen to traditional stitch combinations and the surface will re make itself before your eyes. Be brave, have fun, and learn so much about energy, yarn and finishing, both as yarns and cloth. Kathryn will supply energized yarns to work with, booklet with color graphics and directions and lots of instruction on how to work with these yarns, and postcards of her work for inspiration.
Materials Fee:  $8.

Workshop Instructors

Kathryn Alexander first came to the attention of many when her entrelac socks graced the cover of Spin-Off’s famous sock issue.  Her work is anything but ordinary and and challenges all our definitions of yarn structure and knitted surface with her highly energized yarns.  She is a dyer as well and her work is a highly complex intersection of form, pattern and color.  Kathryn was featured in Knitting in America and she has been a contributor to Spin-Off magazine and Interweave Knits.  She lives in upstate New York.  Her work can be found at www.kathrynalexander.net or in FiberArts magazine at http://www.fiberarts.com/article_archive/reviews/solo/kathrynalexander.asp.  Kathryn is our featured instructor at the 2009 Vermont Sheep and Wool Festival.

Carol Buskey, a Vermont resident, has taught workshops at fiber festivals and Stitches classes across the country on the art of felting (wet & needle), polymer clay, and jewelry making. She has been knitting, spinning, and designing for over 15 years.

Laura Buermann has been working with sheep and fiber at Paradise Bay Farm for most of her life.  When she was 14 she picked up a drop spindle, and has never looked back.  She currently lives, works, and spins in Burlington, Vermont.

Julianne Mackey is a certified Pearl McGown Teacher, has also trained in dying with Maryanne Lincoln, Mickey Lawler, Diane Stoffel and others. Kits designed by her have appeared in catalogs such as the Stitchery, Hohug, Lillian Vernon. In 2001 she was awarded "Most Original Quilt" in the Claire Murray Quilt Contest. In her St Johnsbury studio she teaches, provides custom dyed wool, supplies, and kits.

Ellen Minard, of Ellen's 1/2 Pint Farm, has been hand-painting yarn and fibers for over 20 years. She has taught across the country at various guilds, shops, fiber festivals, and Stitches, and her work is featured in Handpaint Country and Sweaters from New England Sheep Farms.

Julie C. Nelson RYT, (www.coolmoonyoga.com), is a certified yoga instructor and mostly self-taught knitter who is passionate about bringing together her practice and her craft. She lives in NorthWest Vermont with her fabulous family, eight chickens, and lots of yarn and books.

Jane Woodhouse has been spinning for over 30 years.  She currently lives in Peacham, Vermont on Brigid’s Farm which is home to a small flock of Border Leicester cross sheep and natural colored angora goats.   She teaches regularly from her studio.  Besides spinning her interests include natural dyeing, ethnic textiles, surface design techniques on handwoven fabric and organic farming.
